The Power of Choice

Have you ever really thought about the power we have to choose?

What an incredible gift God has given us.

We may not get to choose everything that happens to us, but we do get to choose how we respond. We can choose our attitude. We can choose what we focus on. And we can choose what we allow our minds to dwell on.

I remember one morning when I was rushing to get out the door for an appointment. I was already feeling the pressure of trying to make it on time when suddenly—I knocked over my full mug of coffee.

Coffee went everywhere!

My first thought was, “Well, this sucks. My day already started off horrible, and now this!”

But as I started cleaning it up, my mind began to calm down. And I felt the Holy Spirit gently whisper:

How bad is this really, in the big picture of things?

And suddenly I realized—I had a choice.

I could allow this spilled coffee to ruin my morning and set the tone for the rest of my day, or I could choose a different perspective.

I remember thinking, Maybe this delay is actually protecting me from something I can't see. Maybe there's a reason I'm being slowed down right now.

I didn't know.

But I did know that I could choose my response.

So right there, cleaning coffee off the floor, I chose gratitude.

“Thank You, Lord. I am going to have a great day. Thank You for reminding me of the power of choice. I get to choose my attitude.”

That little moment taught me something I have carried with me ever since:

I may not be able to control every situation, but I can choose what I allow myself to think about.

God tells us this in His Word:

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.” — Romans 12:2, NLT

And I love how science gives us a glimpse into God's incredible design. Through neuroplasticity, our brains are capable of changing as we repeatedly practice new ways of thinking and responding. Even at the biological level, our experiences and behaviors can influence signals involved in gene expression—almost like biological switches that can turn certain cellular processes up or down.

We don’t have to understand all the science to experience the truth of God’s Word, but for me, understanding the science fires me up! It helps me understand the why behind what God is asking us to do. When God tells us to renew our minds, take our thoughts captive, and intentionally choose what we think about, there is wisdom in His instruction—and science gives us a glimpse into why.

God designed us with the ability to learn, change, and develop new patterns.

That's why what we repeatedly choose matters.

Philippians 4:8 tells us to intentionally fix our thoughts on what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and admirable.

God doesn't tell us that we will never have difficult circumstances or negative thoughts.

Instead, He teaches us what to do with our thoughts when they come.

We get to choose what we continue thinking about.

And those choices don't just affect our attitude. Over time, they can influence how we feel, how we respond to stress, how we treat others, and the patterns we build into our lives.

Today's Challenge: CHOOSE

Today, as circumstances unfold, notice your first reaction.

When something doesn't go as planned, pause before allowing that moment to determine the rest of your day.

Ask yourself:

How big is this really in the bigger picture?

What am I choosing to focus on?

Is there another way I could look at this?

What does God want me to focus on right now?

Then CHOOSE the perspective that brings life to you and to those around you.

We cannot always choose what happens to us.

But with God's help, we can choose what we do next.

Sometimes renewing our minds begins in the smallest moments—even standing in the kitchen cleaning up spilled coffee.

Today, I choose gratitude.I choose truth.I choose my attitude.I choose to look for God in the moment.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of choice. Help me become more aware of where I allow my thoughts to go. When circumstances don't go the way I planned, remind me to pause and choose my response instead of simply reacting. Help me renew my mind with Your truth and choose thoughts and attitudes that bring life to me and to those around me. Today, I choose gratitude. I choose truth. And most of all, I choose You. Amen.
