The God-Sized Vacuum

There is a hole in the heart of every human being.
God placed it there.
It is a hunger.
A thirst.
A longing.
A desire for something more.
And it will get filled. The question is: with what?
Will it be filled with the pursuit of more money, more stuff, more success, more attention, more approval, more food, more beauty, more control?
For so many years, I lived trying to fill that hole with things that could never satisfy me. I chased beauty. I chased fitness. I chased people’s approval. I chased achievement. But no matter how much I attained, it was never enough. I always needed more.
And here’s what’s powerful to understand…
Every time we chase something, think about it, dwell on it, and go back to it—we are actually wiring our brain to crave it more.
What we repeatedly think about and pursue creates pathways in our brain.
That’s how God designed it.
So the more I chased approval…
the stronger that pathway became.
The more I chased achievement…
the more my brain expected it to satisfy me.
But it never did.
Because I was strengthening a pathway that could never lead to true fulfillment.
That is the deception.
The more you feed it, the stronger it becomes.
The stronger it becomes, the more it demands.
But that vacuum was always meant for one thing: God.
When I surrendered my life to Christ and turned everything over to Him, something shifted—not just spiritually, but mentally.
I began to rewire my brain.
As I sought Him…
thought about Him…
meditated on His Word…
returned to Him in my struggles…
New pathways began to form.
And here’s the difference:
The more I sought Him,
the more satisfied I became.
The more restful I became.
The more grounded I became.
Because God doesn’t just stimulate hunger—
He satisfies it.
That hole was never meant to be filled with anything but Him.
Yes, there are good things we can enjoy. God gave them to us.
But when they become our focus, our identity, or what we rely on to feel full, they turn into empty pursuits—chasing after the wind.
At the end of my life, I do not want to be remembered for my body or achievements. I want to be remembered by the love of Jesus that filled me and overflowed to others.
I want people to say they saw Him in my life.
And when I meet the Lord face to face, I want to hear:
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
So here is the question:
What are you repeatedly thinking about and chasing right now?
Because that is what you are training your brain to crave.
What “good” or “bad” thing has taken God’s place?
What would it look like to begin rewiring your mind—
to turn your thoughts back to Him again and again?
To say:
Lord, I’m sorry for putting other things ahead of You.
Be Lord of my life.
Rewire my desires.
Fill the places I’ve tried to fill with the world.
He is our living water.
He is our daily bread.
Everything else may feed an appetite for a moment—
but only He truly nourishes the soul.
Scripture:
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…” — Romans 12:2
“Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires…” — Romans 8:5
“Jesus said… ‘Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.’” — John 4:14
